What is your Dog’s Dominating Element?

Why 5 Elements

Five thousand years ago Chinese physicians developed a philosophical yet eminently practical approach to healing called Wu Hsing or the Five Element System. This unique classification and diagnostic system was designed to help you understand who you are, why you behave and feel the way you do, and how the world inside you mirrors the energy and vitality of the natural world. Using this system you can learn to recognize imbalances in body, mind, and spirit and correct them before illness strikes.

The Chinese believe that the Five Elements - Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water - govern the physical, emotional, and spiritual existence of human beings just as they regulate the cycles of growth and change in the external world. An excess or deficiency in any one of these basic forces immediately and powerfully affects your physical health and emotional well-being. Once you learn how to balance these energies, regulate their flow, and adjust any excesses or deficiencies, you can create health and harmony in your life. Each of the Five Elements has a unique nature and spirit, and every animal has a constitutional affinity to one or more of them.

Whether man or animal, disease does begin in the energy field. By using this system, we get to know more about our animals by the way they respond to a given stressor. We have taken the animal’s constitution that is its very foundation and by matching it to an element in the 5-Element Theory, we have been able to build a homeopathic complex for each constitution and thus it’s element. We find that if we can break the emotion that causes the physical disease, the animal will quickly return to its normal harmonious well-balanced self.

Why “Constitution”

Particular breeds of animals are known to be predisposed to a particular behavior. Dogs of a particular “manmade “ breed will tend to have more of some of the basic dog characteristics and less of others, but they will not have any characteristics that are outside other realms of dog hood. Similarly they will tend to display more of one kind of behavior than of another, but they will still be capable of all types of behavior that are recognizably doggy. E.g. Some cocker spaniels exhibit behavior that is graphically described by its name: the Jekyll and Hyde syndrome dependant on the color of their coat. Rottweilers and Dobermans are other breeds that can become aggressive for no apparent reason. These seem to be genetic problems. What it means to us, in practice, is that in treating animals we are entitled to consider the breed in the first instance, but it should only be as a guide to the first avenue of exploration. Members of a particular breed might need any of the remedies at different times. All we can say of notoriously dominant breeds such as Rottweilers, bull terriers, Akitas, chows and schnauzers is that they tend to be dominant and so, on average, will be more likely to be Wood type or Fire type constitutions. But there will be many exceptions to this tendency.

For any animal (or human), disease appears on a background that essentially constitutes their “constitution” and their temperament. And the more we know about these elements constitutes “global” knowledge of both health and disease.

You can’t generalize with the remedies and, just like people; animals do have feelings and should always be treated as individuals and not as groups.

Carbonic Constitution (WOOD AND EARTH)

Carbon or coal from the earth, insoluble in all liquids and all varieties are solid.

The Carbonic Constitution is rigid, straight; his walk is stiff, slow or rapid, but always with cadence.

He has a tendency towards obesity, but always proportionate or harmonious.

The Carbonic Constitution has a good build, is muscular and thrives on physical exercise, resists fatigue and disease. It is an animal that can be disciplined.

Pathological Tendencies

Nutritional diseases: obesity, diabetes, kidney stones (very frequent with cats) or gallstones.

Allergies;Arthrosis,Chronic skin problems (eczema), but also warts, cysts, breast tumors Paralysis of the hindquarters

Carbonic types are chillier and very sensitive to humidity.

Carbonic animals respect discipline and orders in spite of their hardheadedness.

Carbonics must move every day, get the rust out from their joints or they will easily get intoxicated and suffer from skin diseases, arthrosis and obesity.

Psychological Tendencies

Passive, slow, law of the least effort, hardheaded and patient.

The carbonic more than any other animal, needs fresh air and physical exercise.

Phosphoric Constitution (METAL)

From phosphorus: Phos=light, and phoros=to carry.

When applied to people, the phosphoric person is described as being frail, thin, tall, with an elegant walk and harmonious and graceful gestures. His expressive nature makes him easy to comprehend.

As animals go, we can easily recognize within this description, the Irish wolfhound, the whippet, the Afghan, Siamese, Burmese, etc.

Pathological Tendencies

The Phosphoric is hyperthyroid and his pathologies are usually in relation to a blockage of his elimination pathways. He has a hard time managing his minerals, which gives him a fragile nervous system and a weak immune system.

His physical problems in major part are related to his difficult capacity for elimination and his weak respiratory system.

Loss of weight, dehydration, and decalcification are all signs of the phosphoric constitution and one must be very vigilant of diseases such as Parvo Virus = hemorrhagic gastro-enteritis.

Phosphorics are unstable when it comes to maintaining their temperatures = chilly but needing fresh air.

On the Psychological plane, the phosphoric is very nervous, is quick to rise to the occasion but is easily fatigued.

He has no patience and can be violent at times when he is forced to do what he doesn’t want to do. All effort, to be successful, must be short in duration. He is quickly fatigued particularly when deprived of light and fresh air.

The Phosphoric’s food must be rich in minerals and high in protein to be able to rebuild his muscle fiber easily destroyed by oxidation. In case of heavy exercise, good quality carbohydrates would be a must.

Psychological Tendencies

Hypersensitivity - Nervous. Easily fatigued because of his thin musculature and his nervous and violent nature.

Fluoric Constitution (WATER)

The Fluoric Constitution is unstable, is irregular and disorderly in his walk. Has difficulty with his equilibrium whether physical or emotional.

Let’s say that it is a somewhat complicated animal, not easy to understand whose reactions are sometimes unforeseeable.

The Fluoric is short on symmetry, which may cause certain instability and lack of grace. Bones that are badly juxtaposed often cause this attitude. The joints are somewhat big and deformed and the ligaments have insufficient elasticity and the muscle fiber is of poor quality and lacking in tonus. (Examples are: Pekinese, Chihuahua, spitz, Yorkshire)

Pathological Tendencies

Sclerosis, luxation, lumbagos, joint problems and sprains.

Many different types of dogs that are in fashion to own have been victims of Breeders. They have been “fluorized” by insufficient vitamins and minerals, antenatal therapeutics and exogenous intoxications such as medication, serums and vaccines and industrially medicated foods.

His dominating pathology is almost always cardio-vascular: heart attack, thrombosis but also sclerosis and precocious senility (boxer)

Psychological Tendencies

Dominated by his instability and paradoxical nature, which causes agitation and indecision. But they have great observation and are very intuitive.

SULFURIC CONSTITUTION (FIRE)

We can also refer to normally constituted: medium height, normal weight, symmetrical and well balanced.

Pathological Tendencies

Mesenchymal tissue is king. Defenses are strong, aggressive and at times violent (acute disease) but never anarchic and are easily controlled. If he becomes intoxicated or overloaded, it is usually the mucous membranes and the skin that are the first targets for elimination.

The manifestations via the skin are usually of a violent nature, irritated, sore and oozing - Hahnemann’s “psora” - eczema - which is well known in veterinary circles.

The sulfuric has a good appetite, is rarely constipated (contrary to the Carbonic). He dislikes the heat, which is because of his evolution towards a hyper adrenal state. This also has evolved towards dogs that are guilty of aggressive behavior. In a parallel way, sustained adrenals cause a diminished genital and thyroid function as seen in obese sulfurics. The “FIRE” remedy is a natural for fat senile sulfurics.

Psychological Tendencies

Sulfurics are easy to work with and easy to train (Shepherds, hunting dogs) but hardheaded and even irritable.

Because animals have emotions also, these remedies work primarily on their Central Nervous System. They actually heal negative emotional states, and have a direct effect on the animals’ personality.
